NO! But we’re so glad you asked. The Little Yellow House is the historic Crosby Cape House, c. 1790. We’re currently in the midst of a major capital campaign to renovate and restore this house to provide staff and artist housing and a much needed community room. Check out THE CAPE HOUSE PROJECT to learn more and make a donation!
The Box Office is in the lobby of the Indoor Theatre. You have a nice little ride (800 feet) through the Theatre grounds, past the big field on your left (which is the parking lot for the Outdoor Theatre), up around the bend and park in the Indoor Theatre Parking lot. Follow the path to the Indoor Theatre, and there we are! Box Office hours are 10-2 Wednesday – Saturday and 6pm to show-time. Call 508-896-1888 for reservations. Or click here!
Cape Rep Theatre is located on the grounds of Nickerson State Park, on what was once Camp Monomoy, part of Cape Cod’s rich history of summer camps in the mid- to late-20th century (Chevy Chase went to camp here!). Because we are part of the state park system, the 7 acres entrusted to our care need to remain as natural as possible.
As stewards of this property, we are working to rehabilitate all the structures on our campus. We have already renovated the former Camp Chapel into the Robert Delahanty Outdoor Theatre and the former dining hall into our Indoor Theatre. The Cape House is the next project as we work toward restoring and expanding it into desperately needed staff and artist housing and a community room. After we complete the 2-phase Cape House Project, we move on to renovating the Barn! For more info on how to help, click here!
Yes. Both of our theatres are air-conditioned (the Outdoor Theatre, naturally!) and both are handicap accessible. Restrooms for both facilities are in the lobby of the Indoor Theatre.
Yes, clothes are required. Black tie is optional. Actually, we’re a pretty casual place; we want you here and we want you comfy: shoes and shirts? Definitely. Jeweled tiaras? If they make you feel good!
We are not. Cape Rep Theatre was founded in 1986 and reorganized in 1991 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit theatre. Therefore, all of your generous donations are tax deductible!
We consider ourselves a professional non-union theatre. All artists involved at Cape Rep receive at the very least, a stipend for working with us. We try to pay as many artists as possible and work frequently with Equity actors (AEA, aka Actors’ Equity Association, is the professional union for actors and stage managers) and SSDC directors and choreographers (SSDC, the Society for Stage Directors and Choreographers, is the professional union for the latter). Our effort is to provide an artistic home for local artists while bringing in outside artists to help improve the skills and networking opportunities for those within our community.
Well, that is a wonderful question. Choosing our season is one of the hardest things we do. We try really hard to create a season that somehow feels right for the time we’re doing it. We read and read and read some more. We re-read certain plays every year, awaiting the moment when we intuitively know, “yes! This is the right season for this amazing play!” We are committed to discovering new plays. We look for interesting musicals. We always choose an American Classic. We also want the artists working here to do plays about which they feel passionate—finding the marriage between the play and the group of artists doing that play is central to us. An interesting example is last season’s My Fair Lady. For the first time, we produced a musical as our American Classic. And the artistic team, Kim Weild and Scott Storr, were really excited to take a fresh look at this play and to explore what it has to say to us today. They discovered some wonderful new truths that perhaps haven’t been brought out in this musical before. That’s what makes doing live theatre so exciting for us: the possibilities!
We are always happy to bring new people into the family! If you are an artist, send your resume to Cape Rep Theatre, P.O. Box 1305, Brewster, MA 02631 or email it to info@caperep.org. If you’re interested in volunteering, drop us an email or give us a call at 508-896-1888. Or click here to find out more.
Watch our website! We have open auditions for all shows and post the dates and times at www.caperep.org. We also post auditions in local newspapers, including the Cape Cod Times, The Cape Codder, The Cape Cod Chronicle; we’ve even sought actors on Craigslist! Look for us on Facebook too! You can always give us a call at 508-896-1888 for more info.
We do, frequently! We also have an amazing internship program (click here). In the past, we have offered classes in acting and directing and have a wonderful program to train stage managers. One of our most important long-term goals is to develop a conservatory for professional actor training here on Cape Cod. The completion of the Crosby Cape House Renovation and Expansion is central to that effort. We have had classes in the off-season as well. Check back to www.caperep.org frequently to see what’s going on! Drop us an email at info@caperep.org to express your interest.
Well, we think the phrase “starving artist” speaks a truth in good economic times; it is even truer now. Though a non-profit, Cape Rep is an important part of our local economy, employing artists across a range of disciplines: from designers to carpenters to painters to box office personnel to actors to crew members and more; year-rounders, part-timers, seasonal employees. We buy materials and services from local businesses and attract tourists who in turn bring their dollars to Cape Cod inns, restaurants, stores.
Now, more than ever, we need the arts for so many reasons beyond just the practical: to reflect back our past as a way to learn how better to engage with our present; to escape, even for a brief while, from the stress of our daily lives; to remember what it is to be of a community and to look to that community for support in difficult times.
And we’re trying to keep going to the theatre an affordable option for you! Consider buying a subscription, a real value: click here. We offer special ticket offers all season long, particularly during the first weekend of every show. Look for our special offer postcards in your mailbox or call the Box Office at 508-896-1888 to see if we’re running a promotion.
Come see a show and we’ll sell you one during intermission!
