Cape House Project

Restoring an historic house into a home for creativity

In 1994 the Commonwealth of Massachusetts granted Cape Rep Theatre a long-term lease on a several-acre historic site in Nickerson State Park, between Route 6A and Cape Cod Bay. Our mission to create a complex for the performing arts in four derelict structures dating from the 18th century to the heyday of the Cape Cod Sea Camps. We Have renovated Camp Monomoy's chapel in the pines, now our 200-seat outdoor theatre; and the former dining hall, now our 129-seat indoor theatre. With their success came a desperate need of affordable housing for staff and artists.

But at the gateway to our theatres stands the original 18th century Cape House, empty for a quarter-century and in critical need of preservation. So housing and preservation needs have come together. When two state and local grants became available in 2008, Cape Rep seized the chance to solve both problems. The finished Cape House will include a 5-bedroom home providing affordable housing for our staff and a welcoming home for exciting visiting artists, the Courtyard which will act as a campus for our summer interns, and the Community Room which will become a cultural resource for our community.

Grants were won, plans drawn, permits granted, and construction begun in March of 2009. The Cape House is expected to open in late May just in time for 2010 season. There is a ribbon cutting and open house planned for 10 am, Saturday, May 8th!.

We need your help to raise the final funds.
